Important Kinetic Art Artists Past and Present

Kinetic art is a piece of art that depends on movement. Many art pieces are sculptures. Another popular form is mobiles.

Kinetic art can be formed in several ways. The art can use an engine-driven part, a changing electronic image, produced by the wind, formed by water movement, produced by the person looking at the object or just give the illusion of movement.

Four men were responsible for much of the creation of early kinetic art. The first was Naum Gabo. Born to Jewish parents in Russia, Gabo’s work relies on the fascination of art patrons in the early twentieth century with technology and industry. Gabo often constructed electrically driven pieces of art constructed of wire. His book Realist Manifesto is one of the early primers on the subject.

The second is the controversial artist Marcel Duchamp. Duchamp who is responsible for the creation of the term mobile created several kinetic art pieces starting with his bicycle wheel piece for his own studio. One of his other early pieces consisted of a globe cut in half with black circles painted on it. As the globe spins it appears to move backwards and forwards in space. His piece title Looking Glass can be seen at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His art based on a bicycle wheel is still being copied by important artists today.

The third early founder of the movement is Lszl Moholy-Nagy. Born in Hungary, Moholy-Nagy worked as a photographer and artist during World War I where he learned to apply the principles of light to his creations. His most famous medium is in light photograms. He was a founding force in the Chicago School of Design.

The last of the early founders was Marcel Duchamp’s friend Alexander Calder. Calder worked in several mediums before creating his mobile consisting of leaves and animals. Calder also spent much time working in large stabiles. His work La Grande Vitesse was the first funded by the National Endowment for the Art’s Art in Public Places program. His work has inspired many important artists today.

Many artists work in this medium today. One of the top kinetic artists working today is Rebecca Horn. Ms. Horn’s most famous piece is called Concert for Anarchy. It is a grand piano that is suspended upside down and from which the keys thrust out every few minutes.

Another artist working today is David C. Roy. Roy works mainly with wood and springs to create fascinating pieces of art. His most famous piece is Apollo. When one spring is released it causes motion throughout the piece. His Matrix work will move for 20 hours after it is wound one time.

Theo Jansen is doing mesmerizing things with paper and motor mobiles. As the motor works, the paper turns.

Instead of paper, kinetic artist Joe Gilbertson is doing captivating things with motors and rolling balls.

The world will continue to change for kinetic artists as they become more creative with each passing year. Continue to watch the amazing things that they are doing.
